Fave Family Shnacks

The magical combination of finding a snack that is both healthy & addicting. I seek these out, because we have a tendency to over-love something until it's not loved anymore, so keeping snack options fresh and new is a constant for me.  Hopefully you will find something new here that you can add to your arsenal :)

Typically I keep snacks down-low simple... they're snacks not 3 course meals - grab them, and let's get on with it!  I do throw in an occasional who's the best Mom on the planet creation - but generally... not so much.. my kids love me for my spontaneous singing anyways ;-p.

Frozen - Outshine Popsicles - Thank you Dreyer's for giving us non food-dye laden popsicles, and for an affordable price to boot.  These popsicles are void of high fructose corn syrup - I've found them at Winco & Freddies

Frozen - Simply Gogurts:  Freezing your Go-Gurts is instant treat-ville for the kid-lets. They pass them out like they're rock-stars to the neighbor kids - for real.

Did you know Go-Gurts have a 'Simply' Go-Gurt option that doesn't contain food dyes?  Not sure why they don't just do that for all their go-gurts (guess some still prefer that chemical additive?!), but I'll take it!  These can be found even at Winco.

Chobani - Yogurt Tubes - Greek yogurt in a tube, extra protein and no food dye - SCORE!

Nuts - Ooh wow - this is so lame!  Seriously though, I buy in bulk  a different type of nut every week.  We use them as snacks, in their lunches, on oatmeal, as well as toasted and thrown in with veggies at dinner.

Hint - I've had great luck with Throwing out facts to your kids about the food you're offering - and it really makes a difference to whether they'll eat something or not.  Informing them of what body part they are helping with the type of food you're giving them - they go all science-like about it, and darn it it's interesting (in kid friendly language of course).  For instance, did you know that some foods are shaped like the body part they help?  The walnut is shaped like a brain, and it specifically helps your brain out with oils that make you think easier... super brain powers by eating walnuts - Then look at the funky shape & bam it's in their mouth and their eating them.
*A note on Winco Bulk -(I use the top bins only, I'm not going to lie, the bottom bins just freak me out - who has been digging in there?!)

Here's a list of nuts & seeds in our rotation:
(start out with roasted salted, then do a switcheroo to the plain - see if they notice)
  • Slivered Almonds
  • Roasted Almonds
  • Raw Almonds
  • Cashew pieces (they're cheaper than whole)
  • Pecans
  • Pine Nuts (Occasionally - spendy lil things)
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Pepitos - What are these actually? - I forget, but they're good
  • Pumpkin Seeds -
  • Watermelon Seeds - Maybe those are the pepitos?
  • Walnut pieces
  • Peanuts
  • Pistachios
  • Macadamias (These are spendy too, but so good)
Crackers & Cheese / Crackers & Hummus / Just Crackers - Here's my cracker low-down... We love a good ingredient reading party like nobody else, and the least amount of ingredients the better.  Here are my fave crackers for the kidlets in order of healthy-ness (hint, if you just even peek at the ingredient list on a boxed food, and it's huge - just keep peeking at others at another until you find one with a shorter list - and boom you're choosing a healthier option:
  • Trisquits
  • Wheat Thins
  • Rice Crackers - Trader Joes or Costco
  • Gold Fish - Natural Dyes.. the girls love reading the real foods  that make the great colors - that's some cool stuff!
  • Ritz - Meh... you can get the whole grain, but my girls don't like the flavor - not a power-house cracker, but they get the job done!
  • Cheez-its - They are like crack around here - Not the best list of ingredients, and be warned that if you go outside of their original flavor - they are throwing food dye up in your
  • biz-ness.

Energy Bite Balls from Pinterest - These are one of those make every couple of months, because we eat them until we can't stand them.  They are great little positive energy producing snacks, packed with protein, nobody is melting down with these in their tummy.

Lunch box Apples - Traders Joes is the best go to source for the perfectly sized apples for kids to snack on.  We as parents don't have to chop them, nor be offended by the 1/2 eaten apples that get thrown away.  These are smaller, more petite and kids think they're cute too :).  Personal preference is the Pink lady's... sweet without too much tartness!
