Operation Avoid Junk Food at Grocery Stores

I have a strong belief of - Don't buy it & You won't eat it.  I'm the 1st person to admit that if there is something that is totally junky in my house, my sniffer will seek and devour.  We buy soda for a party, guess who is sucking it down until it's gone (and in record time).  While I don't have a religious ban on junky foods, I DO NOT buy them in our weekly menu planning/how are we eating this week grocery trips.

Here's how to avoid buying junk food when grocery shopping:

  • Make your grocery list as thorough as possible. Keep your focus on the list, and nothing but the list (corporal).
  • Put your list in order of how you walk through the store - This will deter side trips to that luscious bakery filled with croissants, hydrogenated fats, jacked up preservatives and drool-worthy donuts that apparently are baked 24 / flipping 7.
  • Change up your grocery route! If you are hitting carb/box land 1st, guess what your cart is going to be filled with?!  Here's the order I follow:
    • Produce
    • Bulk
    • Protein/Meat
    • Dairy
    • Frozen
    • Center Aisles - Food in these will stay good for 10 years because most of it isn't real food.  By this point, your cart should look fabulously full with real ingredients - yay!
    • Breads
    • CrackerVille
