Food Upgrades

Here are some of our ongoing food-upgrades. The goal to not traumatize anyone with a change, while sneaking in healthier versions!

  • Super Food Veggies & Fruits -
I love how easy this upgrade is.  Here's how it works - Look at the color of your produce.  The darker the color, the better it is for you.  The lighter the color, the more water and less nutrients it contains.  Pick darker colors for instant upgrade.  Some examples:
  • Iceberg (has barely anything to it) - Upgrade to Romaine
  • Romaine - Upgrade to Spinach/Kale
  • Bell Peppers - Dark in color, sweet in taste - Go for it!
  • Potatoes - Upgrade to Sweet Potatoes
  • Green Grapes - Upgrade to purple / dark purple grapes

  • Bread
Look at the fiber, protein and carbs of your bread.  If the fiber is above 4g, you're good.  If the protein is above 5g, you're good.  If you see high-fructose corn syrup, find another loaf.

We love: DAVE'S any kind - Yay Dave's, you rock.

  • Fruit Snacks -  Upgrade to SIMPLY FRUIT roll-ups or ANNIE'S FRUIT SNACKS
I have a serious problem with all the fruit snacks out there.  Something about making something look healthy and like it's a fruit serving when it's really a glorified candy bar.  Most of them out there are jacked up with chemicals, high fructose corn syrup and food dyes.  Don't get me wrong, I'm not throwing them away or banning them from my kids (that would result in WW3) if they happen upon them. However, I don't buy them, and instead opt for SIMPLY FRUIT fruit roll-ups, or Annie's fruit snacks.  These don't really have much nutritional value, but at least they are for the most part a natural option!

  • Granola Bars - Upgrade to ZBARS or KASHI
Another candy bar being masked as something healthy for your kids to snack on. Bad news - those quaker oatmeal bars are as healthy as a snickers.  If your kids love granola bar snacks, think about opting for a healthier version that doesn't have high fructose  corn syrup or chemical additives, and fluffy fillers that have no nutritious value.

Zbars are good protein with decent fiber options and Kashi is a trusted brand.  Once I trust a brand it's a bit less work to determine if they are healthy or not - you just know that they are going to be good  for you - Thank you Kashi!

  • Cereals -
Coming Soon!
